History
Part of the fleet of the Batavia
The Buren was part of theso-called 'kermis' fleet that departed from Texel on 28-10-1628. The VOC sent out two fleets to Asia per year and one was called after the yearly fair (kermis) in Amsterdam in October. The leader of the fleet was the Batavia, which became famous after stranding on the Abrolhos islands near Australia, after which many atrocities were committed against the crew by a part of the same crew. The fleet consisted of the Batavia, Buren, Dordrecht, 's-Gravenhage, Assendelft, Kleine David and the Zaandam.
After arrival in Asia, the Buren remained there. The General Missives of the VOC mention on January 4th 1636 that the could manage to keep the ship (amongst others) afloat for about a year - probably since it was in bad shape. Yet the VOC site mentions that the ship was still active in the region of Ambon in the middle of 1637 so it possibly remained in service longer.
