History

The so-called Zorrita La Tabla wreck is a Dutch wreck with 6 cannons in situ. The ship has been dated between 1696 and 1723. The original name is not known. The wreck was named after the two Cuban lighthouses between which it lies.

The year 1696 is found on a tobacco box found in the wreck. A found copper coin has the year 1723. Due to the location, the artefacts and the dating, it is possible that it concerns the wreck of a Dutch West India Company ship.

Description

Archaeological site composed by remains of a shipwreck with six guns. Two are covered with an odic protection, two are partially covered for coralline formations and one more completely covered. There are iron shots and ballast stones.

  • Maximum extension of the site: axis N - S = 25 m; axis E - W = 33 m
  • Area: 825 m2
 
 

Status

The site was partly damaged by archaeological excavations in 1994 and 1997 (11 x 6 x 0.4 m). There is present erosion of seabed and biological deterioration.
