History

The Westergo was a ship of the line of the Admiralty of Friesland.

Built in 1653, the Westergo was present at all the major naval battles of the three Anglo-Dutch Wars.

Disastrous Year
The year 1672 was a disastrous year for the Dutch Republic. It was attacked from all sides by enemies. The decision was forced at sea on June 7, 1672, at the Battle of Solebay.

The combined French-English fleet intended to blockade the ports of the Dutch Republic and thus bring it to its knees. The fleet was hampered in its efforts by many sick ships on board. It was temporarily forced to withdraw to England for refreshments and replenishment.

The much smaller fleet of the Republic, under Michiel de Ruiter, made a bold decision and crossed the Channel in pursuit of the Anglo-French fleet. The Dutch fleet engaged the surprised Anglo-French fleet off Solebay.

Michiel de Ruiter managed to so severely impact the Anglo-French fleet that the blockade and even a feared invasion of Holland were averted. Thus, the destruction of the Republic (the disastrous year of 1672) was averted. On land, it took another year for Louis XIV's army to be driven out.

Westergo
The Westergo fought bravely under Captain Yde Hylkesz. Collaert in the vanguard during the battle. The ship survived the battle but, due to an accident during the night of June 8th, caught fire and exploded:
