History

' HNL MS Wassenaar ' was a ship of the line built for the French Imperial Navy. The original intended name was l'Audacieux (boldness). After the fall of Napoleon's Empire, the ship, which was under construction, was transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy. In 1816, the ship was completed and entered service with the newly established Royal Netherlands Navy under the name HNLMS Wassenaar.
She served in the Mediterranean, among other places.

Java War Troop Transport
On January 12, 1827, the Wassenaar departed for Java together with HNLMS Waterloo and HNLMS Zeeuw as a troop transport. There were 668 soldiers on board the Wassenaar (a volunteer battalion).

The Netherlands had regained its 'possessions' in the Indies from Great Britain following the fall of Napoleon. From the time of the return, Dutch 'possessions' were expanded through constant wars throughout the entire 19th century. In 1825, an uprising broke out in central Java. Under the inspiring leadership of the Islamic Prince Diponegoro, large parts of Java were liberated.

The tide turned when KNIL General de Kock gained access to fresh troops brought in aboard the Waterloo and the Zeeuw. The war ended with the capture of Diponegoro in 1830
