History
The Schrik was a gunboat in the service of the Batavian navy (the navy of the Batavian Republic in the Netherlands).
Two weeks after the surrender of the squadron of rear admiral Samuel Story (at the Vlieter Incident)*, an English squadron sailed into the Zuiderzee. The final goal was to conquer Amsterdam. First the coasts of Friesland and North Holland were to be taken. Stavoren and Lemmer in Friesland were attacked.
On September 25th, the Batavian gunboats Schrik and Vernieler and the galley Zeeduivel were lying near Lemmer. The crew was rebellious and several rabble-rousers were arrested. The unrest mainly seems to have been caused by unpaid wages.
On September 25th, British frigates came in view of the port. Captain Bolton demanded the surrender of the town. When an answer was not forthcoming, Lemmer was bombarded on September 29th. The gunboats, under the command of Lieutenant Scheler, tried to escape. In the end, Scheler decided to set the Schrik on fire and sink the Vernieler to keep them from enemy hands (see De Jonge, V, p. 496). The crews of the ships later caused much trouble in the villages. Lemmer was shortly occupied by the English.
*)The Vlieter Incident was an event on 30-08-1799 in which a complete Batavian fleet squadron surrendered without resistance to the English in the Vlieter estuary.
