History
The fluteship 'Otter' left Texel for Batavia in January 1636. She then stayed and continued to serve in Asia.
She made her last voyage from Banda to Batavia with a cargo of spices: Besuijden Buton versijlt op een onbekende drooghte op 7 september 1643.¹
The cargo and ship were lost. About 30 survivors tried to reach Makassar by boat. The account of the only surviving boat scourge Abraham Thomassen of Amsterdam has been preserved:
After five days of sailing behind the large country Maccasaer arrived at a negorij Selanea. There they were initially treated kindly ... unexpectedly attacked and killed with krisses and other guns.
Most of the passengers died. Abraham Thomassen was wounded and fled into the jungle. He remained there for 3 months, survived and was taken to Buton where he was eventually transferred to the VOC.
(Dagregister 1644)
The VOC was on hostile terms with the rajah of Buton who did not want to submit to the VOC. Following this incident and the transfer of the only survivor, a kind of peace was agreed (Macleod, 296)
