stepping stones of maritime history

The Company opened an office in Sadras because of the high quality of the cotton fabrics manufactured there. The town's claim to fame was the extreme care with which the textiles were dyed. Another major factor was the wide of variety of rough and polished stone the VOC was able to buy here to build houses in Batavia and Ceylon.
