The Nassau sailed in convoy from Curaçao to the Netherlands. Soon after departure the ship appeared to be leaking seriously. It could be kept afloat for another eight weeks with 24/7 pumps Eventually the ship had to be abandoned and it sank on the Atlantic Ocean in June 1783.

Karel Christiaan Nassau Weilburg was the brother-in-law of Stadtholder Willem V.
