stepping stones of maritime history

History

The Gele Zon, also spelled Geele Sonne, was part of a WIC fleet under the command of general Boudewijn Hendrickz that was sent out to reinforce Bahia In Brazil in 1625 (which had been conquered by Piet Hein the year before). Yet Hendricksz was too late. When he arrived, Bahia had been retaken and heavily fortified by the Spanish.

He then chose a new goal and went to the Caribbean with 18 ships to conquer Puerto Rico. On 30 August his fleet was near St. Vincent to get water and provisions. They departed on 10 September and got caught in a violent storm. From the fleet the Gele Zon, the Gouden Zon and the Vlissingen were lost in the tempest. The rest made it to Puerto Rico, but were unable to conquer the city. They then left for Cuba. A year later Boudewijn Hendricksz died there.
