History

Chartered for a voyage to Portugal

The Wapen van Nijmegen was a small merchant vessel. Was owned by skipper Rijck Frederiksz. of Enkhuizen. In August 1656, it was rented by the Portuguese merchant/freighter Sebastiaan Continho, who operated from Amsterdam (see the notary archive sources under references). It was chartered for a voyage to Aveiro in Portugal and from there back to Amsterdam via Porto.

In October 1656, the Wapen van Nijmegen was in Porto. According to the declaration of an eye witness, Gerard Hartman (a merchant operating in Bahia in Brazil), the ship was lost while leaving the bay and port of Porto.

The ship struck a reef on the south side of the bay and "was bashed to pieces and sunk without any of the loaded goods salvaged."

In May 1657, skipper Frederiksz. declared the following about the disaster: "Parts pf the wreck were cast upon the beach, amongst which masts and sails, [and] iron rods. The remnants of the wreck were sold." (See the notary archive sources under references.)
