Stad en Lande was a ship of the WIC Groningen chamber. The ship was captured by an English squadron in the Strait of Calais on August 3, 1661. Stadt en Lande came from West Africa (Gambia River) with a cargo consisting of, among other things, ivory, hides, and wax. The ship had been in service for 9 years before it was captured by the English.

Information regarding the cargo and age of the ship comes from Het Kort en Bondigh verhael*, which recounts the damage suffered by the Dutch West India Company (WIC), among others, at the hands of the English in 1661. The De Stadt en Lande was brought to Dover. What became of the ship afterwards is unknown. It was not returned.

British attacks
In 1661, the Company of Royal Adventurers of England had begun attacking WIC forts in West Africa. The British wanted to gain a foothold in West Africa. Captain/privateer Robert Holmes (1622-1692) was sent to West Africa as commander of a squadron of 5 ships (Henrietta, Sophia, Amity, Griffin, and Kinsale). His orders (drawn up by Coventry) stipulated that he had to assist the company's representatives in every possible way and build a fort. It was against this background that the Stad en Lande returned from Africa and was brought up by the English.**
