Sparenrijk was built by the Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), the Dutch East India Company, in 1745. She made four successful voyages to the Dutch East Indies and back to the Netherlands. Returning to Patria on her fifth voyage, she encountered a heavy storm on 27 March 1762 and sank in the harbour of Matara, along with the ships Rhoon and Rijder.
