History

Merchantman lost in a battle

The Sampson was a merchant ship, a so-called straatsvaarder (a ship that sailed the route through the Strait of Gibraltar towards the Mediterranean). We find the ship in a declaration (attestation) in the notarial archives of Amsterdam. On its way back from the Strait of Gibraltar, the ship was 'verongelukt int slaen', or lost in a fight. It does not become clear from the attestation what exactly happened.¹

Because of the date, it could concern a fight with a Spanish ship, because the 80 years' war between Spain and the Netherlands was still going on, or a fight with a Algerian privateer.

Description

It becomes clear from the attestation that the ship was armed, yet it does not say what kinds of guns were on board.
