History

The Oranje was a Dutch ship of the line of the Maze admiralty college. Earlier, Cornelis van der Hoeve was captain of this ship, but it seems that during this last voyage, van der Kolk was captain. A number of sources mention the final fate of an unnamed Dutch warship from Rotterdam around the date the Oranje was lost according to official admiralty sources, and since no other ships of the Maze admiralty were lost in this period, all evidence points to the Oranje.

Sunk in action

The Oranje was on a convoy voyage, on its way to Lisbon and Setubal in Portugal (then called Sint Ubes by the Dutch), and to Cadíz in Spain. At the end of December 1692, the convoy was attacked near the Isles of Scilly by two French warships under De Fourbin (or Forbin, possibly on La Perle) and d'Amfreville (another source mentions four ships). The ship was badly damaged during the gun fight and could not be boarded due to the bad weather. It was lost with all crew. A number of merchant ships were taken.
