History

The ship the Luipaard was a frigate of the Noorderkwartier Admiralty. It is first mentioned in 1629. From 1629 to 1633, Boudewijnsz was captain of the ship. After this, Jan Warnaertsz Capelman was captain from 1633 until 1636.

Demise near Flanders

The Luipaard left from Texel to cruise near the Flemish coast. On October 6, 1635, she was attacked by three vessels from Dunkirk. The ship was very badly damaged. Among other hits, it sustained several hits under the waterline. Twelve people died and 30 were wounded. The ship sank and the crew was taken prisoner and transported to Dunkirk. Capelman managed to escape. He had the events recorded in an attestation in Alkmaar in the Netherlands on March 17th, 1637.

In 1639, Jan Warnaertsz Capelman became captain on the Alkmaar.
