History

The Julia (fishery number IJM 63) was a sailing lugger from the Dutch port of IJmuiden. It departed from IJmuiden to go fishing on Februariy12th, 1918. After that, nothing was heard from the ship nor the crew.

A comparable steel lugger like the Julia. The type was called 'platgat' (flatbottom) because of the flat stern.

The cause of the loss could not be established with certainty, but the Shipping Council thought it likely that it was connected to the wartime circumstances.

That means that this sailing lugger possibly collided with a sea mine and was lost because of the explosion.

Eight fishermen lost their lives with this. The perished fishermen are skipper Johannes Cornelis Stekelenburg from IJmuiden and from Scheveningen first mate Pieter Tufboer (45 years old) and the sailors Cornelis van der Harst (45), his son Johannes Zier van der Harst (18), Dirk Kuijt (46), Pieter Kuijt ( 41), his son Willem Kuijt (18) and Simon de Mos (16) (see references).

On the website Allesoverscheveningen.nl the story of the ship and the Kuijt family is told by Mink Kuijt.
