History
The 'Grote Sint Joris' was a private merchant ship hired by the Admiralty at the beginning of the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Its purpose was to undermine the English enemy in the Mediterranean and the Strait, as it was called.
On May 4, 1665, De Drie Koningen and the Grote Sint Joris were in the harbor of Puerto de Santa Maria (near Cadiz). They saw an English frigate, The Crown, looming ahead, coming from Tangier. Both hired ships set sail and pursued the Crown.
De Grote Sint Joris attempted to cut off the Brit but ran aground on a reef. The ship was firmly stuck and was lost.
De Drie Koningen continued the chase, but the Englishman managed to escape. Honor was saved, but one ship was lost in the process. (De Jonge, II, 54)
