History
The frigate *Groot Bentveld* belonged to the Amsterdam chamber of the WIC (West India Company). The vessel served as both a slave ship and a company cruiser.
Among other duties, it was deployed as a cruiser off the coast of Guinea to intercept smuggling vessels (1724–1727). During a battle near Cabo Lopez, a Portuguese ship was sunk, resulting in 160 deaths (Heijer 203).
In 1729, the ship was outfitted for a slave-trading voyage to West Africa. It met with disaster during the outbound journey and foundered with the loss of all hands. The *Groot Bentveld*—ship and entire cargo—ran aground and sank off Texel.*
