History

The fishing vessel Centrum with registration number IJM 251 was a sailing lugger from the Dutch port of Vlaardingen. The registration number was given out on March 20th , 1916.

The Centrum left port to go fishing for herring on June 28th, 1918. The ship was sighted by the Stern I (IJM 233) at 55'30"N/ 4' 26''E. After that, nothing was heard from the ship again. Halfway July 1918, the ship was declared to be missing. The lugger Drie Gebroeders from Vlaardingen found the sloop of the ship at 56'N/5'16"E. The Centrum probably sank due to war actions and was lost with all hands (see references).

Perished crew members:

Jan Van Es (skipper)
Jac. Visser
C. Hordijk
Jacob Veldheer
Kornelis. van Vliet
Cornelis Welbie
Martinus Brand
Jacob Welbie

From the adds concerning the loss it becomes clear that the crew had tight family relations asides from colleagues, making the disaster even more tragic.
