History

The barque Afrikaan was a two-masted ship that operated on routes within the Indonesian archipelago. In a ship list from 1760 was categorized as a 'smaller vessel'.

She was en route to Timor with a cargo of rice, among other things, when the ship was attacked by Larantuqueiros, (also called 'black Portuguese' then) from the town of Larentoeka.* This happened in the channel of the same name between Flores and Solor, in January 1764. According to the 'dispatched letters and papers' of the VOC, The crew perished in this action, except for one European boy. perished.²

A cannon and a cargo of spoiled rice from the Afrikaan were reportedly later salvaged by local inhabitants.

*) Many Portuguese settled in Larentoeka after the fall of Malacca in 1641 and Masakasar in 1669. Descendants of these Portuguese called themselves Larantuqueiros. They were referred to as 'Black Portuguese' in VOC sources. See also Kingdom of Larantuka.
