History
The barque 'Afrikaan' was a two-masted ship that operated on routes within the Indonesian archipelago. It was categorized as a smaller vessel.¹
She was en route to Timor with, among other things, rice when the ship was attacked by Larantuqueiros, or Black Portuguese from the town of Larentoeka, in the eponymous channel between Flores and Solor. This was in January 1764.* The crew, except for one (a young European), perished.²
A cannon and a cargo of spoiled rice from the 'Afrikaan' were reportedly salvaged by local inhabitants.³
*) Many Portuguese settled in Larentoeka after the fall of Malacca in 1641 and Masakasar in 1669. Descendants of these Portuguese called themselves Larantuqueiros. They were referred to as Black Portuguese in VOC sources. See also Kingdom of Larantuka
