History
The Adriana (fishery number SCH 8) was a sailing fishing ship from the Dutch port of Scheveningen.
It ran on a mine at the height of Scheveningen on August 30th, 1918. Arie Bal and Philip Baak, 17 and 14 years old respectively, survived the disaster.
The were in the foreship together with Klaas Pron (71 years old) when the aft of the schip was blown away by an explosion. The rest of the crew were there and did not survive the blast.
Arie Balk jumped into the water. Klaas Pronk and Philip Baak jumped into the sloop but that tipped over. Pronk disappeared in the depths but the young Baak managed to hold on to a piece of driftwood.
The two boys were picked up 20 minutes later by the SCH 338 of skipper Mos who saw the accident happen. The rest of the crew died.
